Cooler for a road trip that keeps food cold

There's a big difference between taking a break at a rest stop with lukewarm water and squashed cold cuts – and opening a cooler on a road trip with cold drinks, fresh breakfast, and dinner ready for the campfire. A good cooler doesn't just make the trip more comfortable. It gives you the freedom to stay an extra night by the lake, shop less often, and choose accommodation based on the view rather than the nearest supermarket.

But the right solution depends on how you travel. Should the cooler sit in the trunk on weekend trips, come along for a week in Norway, or be a permanent part of a complete car camping setup? Here’s an overview so you can choose the cooling, power, and size that actually fit your plans.

Choose a cooler based on your trip – not just the price

The first choice isn't the brand, but your needs. A passive cooler with ice packs can be sufficient for a day trip, a picnic, or a single overnight stay where you can replenish ice. It's simple, quiet, and requires no power. However, the temperature will continuously drop, especially if it's opened often or left in a hot car.

For road trips and car camping, many therefore choose an electric compressor cooler. It can maintain a set temperature stably, even when the sun is on the car, and several models can cool down to freezing temperatures. This makes a real difference when you need milk for your morning coffee, vegetables for dinner, and cold drinks on day three or five.

A thermoelectric cooler falls somewhere in between. It is often cheaper and lighter but typically cools relative to the outside temperature. On a mild Danish summer day, it might work fine. In a hot car in Southern Europe, it will have a harder time keeping food properly cold. Therefore, a compressor cooler is often the most reliable investment if you plan to use the cooler often and in different seasons.

How big should a road trip cooler be?

It's tempting to choose the largest possible liters. But a large cooler takes up space, weighs more, and often uses more power, and it can quickly make the trunk impractical. The best size is one that provides space for your food without stealing space from your sleeping solution, water, clothes, and other essential gear.

For one or two people on a weekend trip, around 20-30 liters is often enough for basic groceries, drinks, and a couple of meals. If you're traveling as a family, or want to be self-sufficient for several days, 35-50 liters is often more realistic. Also, consider the shape: a low and long model might fit well under a campervan module, while a tall model more easily accommodates standing bottles.

Especially consider where the cooler will be placed while driving, and how you will access it when the car is packed. A cooler that can only be opened after the mattress, bags, and cooking gear have been moved will rarely be used optimally. Therefore, measure the space in the car, including the height to the lid, before you choose.

Pack with air around the items

A compressor cooler cools best when cold air can circulate. Fill it well, but don't pack everything so tightly that ventilation is blocked. Use small boxes or bags to separate breakfast, snacks, and dinner. This way, the lid doesn't have to stay open for long while you're looking for butter or a can of soda.

It also helps to pre-cool food and drinks from home. A cooler should primarily keep the temperature down, not expend a lot of effort cooling warm items from room temperature.

Power is what determines freedom

A 12V connection in the car is obvious while driving, but it's not always the best solution when you're stationary. If the cooler draws on the car's starter battery all night, you could potentially wake up to a car that won't start. Many coolers have battery protection, but it's still worth knowing your setup.

For short trips, you can let the cooler run while driving and turn it off upon arrival, if the weather and contents allow. For longer trips, a power station is a much more flexible solution. It keeps the cooler running without straining the starter battery and can also power phones, lamps, and other smaller equipment.

How long the power lasts depends on the cooler's size, the set temperature, the surroundings, and how often the lid is opened. A cooler placed in the shade and set to 5 degrees typically uses much less energy than one in a hot car that needs to maintain freezing temperatures. If you want to be out for several days without driving, a solar panel for the power station provides extra peace of mind. This is especially practical on summer road trips where the car is parked for a long time at the beach, in a natural spot, or in the mountains.

Placement in the car matters more than you think

Even an efficient cooler uses unnecessarily much power if it's crammed in without air around the ventilation grilles. The compressor needs to be able to dissipate heat. Therefore, leave a little space at the sides and avoid covering the cooler with blankets, bags, or jackets.

Direct sunlight is also an energy thief. In a station wagon or SUV, it can be advantageous to place the cooler behind the seats where there is shade, and use sunshades in the windows when the car is parked. In a more fixed setup, the cooler can be placed so it is easy to open from the tailgate or from under the awning. This simplifies breaks – and makes it more likely that you'll actually use it as part of your camp.

At the same time, ensure proper securing during driving. A full cooler is heavy, and during hard braking, it must not be able to slide forward into the cabin. Straps, attachment points, or a stable spot among other equipment are simple but important details.

Temperatures suitable for food

For general refrigerated items, 3-5 degrees is a good starting point. Milk, cheese, cold cuts, and cooked leftovers keep best at this temperature, without vegetables risking cold damage. For drinks, the temperature can be slightly higher if power consumption needs to be reduced.

If you want to bring frozen items, it naturally requires lower temperatures and more power. On a road trip, it's often smarter to use the freezing function specifically: for example, freeze ice packs or individual items from home, and then use the cooler for refrigeration. This provides a more stable temperature at the start of the trip and less strain later.

Also, be realistic about raw ingredients. Fish, fresh meat, and dairy products require more consistent cooling than fruit, bread, and canned goods. Plan the most sensitive meals for the beginning of the trip, and choose durable items for the last days if you are unsure about power or temperature.

A setup that suits your way of traveling

The cooler works best when it's considered together with the rest of the car. If you have a rooftop tent, it can be ready at the tailgate along with the kitchen module and water container. If you sleep inside the car, a compact cooler under a module can free up valuable space for the mattress. And if you head out spontaneously after work on Friday, a solution with a fixed 12V cable and a spot where the cooler can be quickly secured is far more useful than equipment that takes half an hour to pack.
